The heat in these candies all make perfect sense when you consider the creator of Atomic Fireball. He just happens to be of Italian descent which explains why he came up with a hot, red spicy candy!
Nello Ferrara came up with these Fireballs in 1954, he is the son of Salvatore Ferrara, the founder of Ferrara Pan. Atomic Fireballs are made with a method called "hot panning", each candy starts with one single grain of sugar that is placed in the giant panner, which is then heated over a gas flame while liquid sugar, flavour and colour are added. This process is repeated over a two week time period, increasing the size to a one-inch ball. A lot goes into these feisty little candies, each Atomic Fireball has hundreds of layers! Atomic Fireballs are approximately 7/8" in diameter.
